The coastal region is defined by the area of North Carolina from the Sandhills to the continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean. This 32-county geographic region is generally divided into 3 sub-regions: Northeastern Coastal Plain and Outer Banks; Mid-Coastal Plain; and Southeastern Coastal Plain.
